How GST is calculated

The Goods and Services Tax is a single indirect tax charged on most goods and services in India. It is worked out as a percentage of the taxable value of what you buy or sell. There are two everyday questions this calculator answers: how much GST to add to a base price, and how much GST is already baked into a GST-inclusive total.

Adding GST is straightforward. The tax is the base amount multiplied by the rate — GST = amount × rate ÷ 100 — and the final price is the base plus that tax. So ₹1,000 of goods at 18% carries ₹180 of GST and costs ₹1,180. Removing GST is the reverse: when a price already includes tax, divide it by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to recover the base, and the remainder is the GST. A ₹1,180 inclusive price at 18% breaks down to a ₹1,000 base and ₹180 tax.

Where the GST goes depends on whether the sale is within a state or across states. For an intra-state sale the tax is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state government (SGST), so an 18% rate appears on the invoice as 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For an inter-state sale a single IGST at the full rate applies instead. This calculator shows the CGST/SGST split that most local invoices use.

India's GST has a handful of slabs — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — with essentials taxed lightly, the bulk of goods and services at 18%, and luxury or sin items at 28%. Picking the right slab matters: charging the wrong rate on an invoice creates reconciliation headaches later, so it is worth confirming the correct rate for your product's HSN or SAC code.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

To add GST, multiply the base amount by the GST rate: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and the total is amount + GST. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the base, and the difference is the GST.

What are the GST slabs in India?

The main GST rates are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Everyday essentials are taxed at lower rates, most goods and services fall under 18%, and luxury or sin goods are taxed at 28%.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — so 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale across states, a single IGST of the full rate applies instead. This calculator shows the CGST/SGST split used for intra-state supply.

How do I remove GST from a total price?

Switch this calculator to "Remove GST", enter the GST-inclusive total and the rate, and it works out the base price and the GST portion by dividing the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100).

Is GST calculated on the base price or the total?

GST is always charged on the taxable (base) value of the goods or services. When a price is quoted as GST-inclusive, the base is back-calculated from the total before the tax portion is found.
